Windows XP Flaw Needs A Patch

A denial of service flaw in the Windows Remote Desktop Service could be attacked, causing a system crash.
The flaw had been reported privately to Microsoft, which has been reportedly working on a patch today for the issue. But according to CNET News, the DoS flaw was made public, pre-empting Microsoft's desire to issue the patch as part of its August security bulletin distribution.
A post on the Security Protocols website says the flaw was reported to Microsoft on May 4th. Security organization SANS.org reports that Remote Desktop is not enabled by default on Windows XP. Also, the author of the exploit possess Proof of Concept code but has chosen not to release that.
Details have been minimal on the topic, save for its potential impact on a Windows XP machine. That includes its Home, Professional, Tablet, and Media Center Edition software running SP2.
Recently, Microsoft released three security bulletins rated Critical for Internet Explorer, Word, and Windows. All Windows users should check the Microsoft security web site for more information on those fixes, as well as the forthcoming patch for the Remote Desktop DoS condition.
