Should Microsoft Offer Free Vista Upgrades?

Techdirt asks an excellent question, one I've been wondering myself: Since Windows Vista is missing the holiday season, why not give free Vista upgrades computers bought during that period?
It isn't the world's craziest idea, and it wouldn't be the first time something was sold with a coupon for the next version inside the box (in fact, some PC makers have done this in the past, and probably will do it on their own).
Since PCs are going to be eventually sold as made for Windows Vista, wouldn't everybody win if those PCs came now with Vista coming later? Hell, Microsoft could start selling Vista right now, far ahead of any earlier estimates, and maybe get rid of some of that bad blood. Sure, they won't sell as many copies as they would have in a real holiday season, but it'll help Microsoft, PC manufacturers, and quiet angry shareholders.
