What’s In The Vista Versions?

A briefly available Windows Vista Product Guide revealed some interesting things about the coming operating system, some of which Ed Bott is blogging. In his first post on the guide, he runs down the differences between the various Vista versions you can buy.

The highlights:
  • No Aero in Home Basic


  • RAM maximums: 4GB in 32-bit, in 64-bit: 8GB in Home Basic, 16GB in Home Premium, and 128GB in others


  • No Tablet PC features in Home Basic


  • Limited Windows Mobility Center in Home Basic and Home Premium


  • No Windows SideShow in Home Basic


  • No Parental Controls in Business or Enterprise


  • Media Center only in Home Premium and Ultimate


  • Home Basic gets Movie Maker; Home Premium and Ultimate get Movie Maker HD


  • Themed slide shows only in Home Premium and Ultimate


  • No new Vista premium games in Home Basic; not installed by default in Business and Enterprise


  • Windows Fax and Scan unavailable in Home Basic and Home Premium, and installed by default only in Business


  • No new Windows Backup in Home Basic


  • Image-based backups, Shadow Copies and Encrypted File System only in Business, Enterprise and Ultimate


  • Bit Locker only in Enterprise and Ultimate
